“Ever wondered where the Navy wins the information war?” That’s essentially the mission driving the Naval Information Warfare Center Atlantic Headquarters. The NIWC Atlantic is not just any building. It’s an Echelon III activity of the United States Navy. It’s located right here in North Charleston, South Carolina.

This center delivers vital information warfare solutions. These solutions protect national security. The NIWC Atlantic conducts research and development. It handles prototyping and engineering. Testing, evaluation, and installation are also key. The center sustains integrated information warfare capabilities. These services span all warfighting domains. There’s a strong emphasis on expeditionary tactical capabilities. Enterprise IT and business systems are crucial too. All of this drives innovation and warfighter information advantage.

Think about communication systems like radios. Consider networking systems like routers and switches. Cyber operations are included such as red teams and forensics. Then there’s network defense, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance. Business systems handle benefits and personnel matters. Information security is vital.

Originally established in 1978, NIWC Atlantic has evolved. It keeps pace with technology, budgets, and warfighter needs. The name changed in February 2019. It went from Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Atlantic SPAWAR to Naval Information Warfare Center Atlantic. This reflects an increased focus on cyber warfare.

NIWC Atlantic is one of three Echelon III activities. These report to the Naval Information Warfare Systems Command NAVWARSYSCOM. NAVWARSYSCOM reports to the Chief of Naval Operations and the Assistant Secretary of the Navy.

Here at the headquarters at Naval Support Activity Charleston in Hanahan, South Carolina, almost 5,000 personnel are employed. Over half are in science and engineering. In the Charleston area, around 3,050 people work in 71 buildings. These buildings surround the HQ Building. Two integration facilities are located on the former Charleston Naval Shipyard grounds.

Other major NIWC Atlantic locations include Hampton Roads, Virginia; New Orleans, Louisiana; and Naval District Washington, D.C.. There are also several CONUS and OCONUS satellite locations.

The activities here are organized into five departments. These include Fleet C4I and Readiness, Expeditionary Warfare, Enterprise Systems, Shore C2ISR and Integration, and Science and Technology. Each department manages numerous projects.

NIWC Atlantic has a rich history. In 2008, SSC Atlantic was commissioned, uniting former SSC sites. This created a larger, more integrated center.

The NIWC Atlantic continues to adapt. It supports the Navy’s evolving needs. The center’s work ensures that our military maintains its information advantage. Captain Matthew R. O’Neal assumed command in 2024. He is the current commander.

From its humble beginnings to its current status, the Naval Information Warfare Center Atlantic Headquarters remains a critical asset. It’s a place where innovation meets defense. It’s a place where the future of naval warfare is being written.
