The salty air carries whispers of history. Before you stands Naval Amphibious Base Coronado a vital part of US naval history.

Established in 1943 this base wasn’t always there. The land was literally created by dredging San Diego Bay. This allowed larger World War II ships to navigate easily. The resulting fill material formed much of the base’s bayside.

Naval Amphibious Base Coronado quickly became a crucial training ground. Landing craft crews trained here before deploying to the South Pacific. Their efforts contributed significantly to the end of World War II. Street names like Guadalcanal Tarawa and Bougainville commemorate these battles.

The base isn’t just about the past. Today Naval Amphibious Base Coronado is home to over 30 commands. Around 5000 personnel serve here. Another 7000 students and reservists train there. It’s a major training center for special and expeditionary warfare. The Navy SEALs and Special Boat Units call this place home.

A curious fact few know is that several buildings have a swastika-shaped layout. This was discovered in 2007 via Google Earth. Though plans were made to modify these buildings the shape remains visible even today.

Naval Amphibious Base Coronado isn’t just a military base. It’s a wildlife preserve too. The base protects the California least tern. It actively manages nesting areas. Training schedules are adjusted to avoid disrupting these endangered birds. The Navy’s efforts have led to increased populations of both the terns and the western snowy plover.

Naval Amphibious Base Coronado is more than a training facility. It’s a testament to naval history innovation and environmental stewardship. A place where history and the future intertwine. A place where you can feel the weight of history and the power of the Navy.
