What secrets does the Naturschutzgebiet Heuckenlock hold? Here on Wilhelmsburg Island, at the edge of the bustling city of Hamburg, lies a hidden gem. The Naturschutzgebiet Heuckenlock is a place where the rhythm of the tides dictates the pulse of life. It’s one of the last tidal floodplain forests in Europe.

The Naturschutzgebiet Heuckenlock whispers tales of a time long past, a time before concrete and steel dominated the landscape. Imagine a vast expanse of Süsswasserwatt, a unique freshwater tidal mudflat. Priels, reminiscent of the North Sea coast, carve their way through the terrain. The air is crisp and clean. The quiet is a balm to the ears, a stark contrast to the nearby A1 Autobahn. Thousands of vehicles race by daily just beyond the borders of this sanctuary.

The Naturschutzgebiet Heuckenlock’s unique location makes it a haven for biodiversity. Over 400 plant species thrive here, including some on the brink of extinction. The Schierlings-Wasserfenchel, a delicate and endangered plant, finds refuge here. Even more unique is the Grannensegge. This remarkable plant is found nowhere else in Germany. The area buzzes with life. The narrow walking path winds through wildflowers and untamed shrubs. It’s a testament to the wild heart of nature. The sheer variety of life makes it the most biodiverse area in the Hamburg region.

The name “Heuckenlock” itself echoes the history of this place. “Lock” in Low German refers to a water-filled depression, while “Heucke” is the name of a family that once resided on Moorwerder Island. They even owned land within the nature reserve. The tides, driven by the distant North Sea, shape the landscape. They flood the area over a hundred times a year. The Elbe water, rich with nutrients, deposits a thin layer of silt with each high tide, nourishing the unique ecosystem.

This constant ebb and flow has given rise to the Süsswassertideauwald, a freshwater tidal floodplain forest. The vegetation changes with the elevation. In the lowest areas, where flooding is most frequent, reeds and Rohrkolben dominate. Higher up, willows, poplars, alders, and ash trees form the Weichholzaue, the softwood floodplain. On the driest areas, you might find remnants of the Hartholzaue. This hardwood floodplain, once home to oaks and elms, is sadly diminished due to modern flood control measures. One ancient flat-leaved elm, over 400 years old, stood as a silent witness to the passage of time until it succumbed to a storm in 2013.

A two-kilometer-long trail meanders through the heart of Naturschutzgebiet Heuckenlock. Follow the Stillhorner Horndeich to its tip, and a second path will lead you to Bunthäuser Spitze. Here, the Norderelbe and Süderelbe meet, marked by the small but charming Bundhaus lighthouse. Before your visit, remember to check the Elbe’s water level. The tides are a powerful force, and high water can flood the entire area. Bring your boots and insect repellent, and prepare to be enchanted by the wild beauty of the Naturschutzgebiet Heuckenlock. This is a place to walk, to listen, and to connect with the natural rhythms of the Elbe.
