Why is this granite boulder dotted with small, round hollows? This, my friends, is the Naturdenkmal Näpfchenstein. It’s more than just a rock. It’s a puzzle left behind by the last ice age. The Naturdenkmal Näpfchenstein sits southwest of Frankfurt (Oder), on a small, tree-covered island in the middle of a field. It’s a protected natural monument. This isn’t the only Näpfchenstein in Frankfurt (Oder). Another one exists further northwest in the city forest, also designated a natural monument. But this one, this peculiar rock we stand before, holds a unique charm. Imagine a massive glacier, slowly dragging this 15-ton, 5.5 cubic meter boulder across the landscape. Eventually, the ice retreated, leaving the Naturdenkmal Näpfchenstein stranded on this little island. Now, about those curious “Näpfchen,” or little cups, on its surface. They are about 4 cm in diameter and 8 cm deep. Their purpose remains a mystery. Some believe they are prehistoric, possibly used in rituals. An 1875 ethnology journal even suggested the Naturdenkmal Näpfchenstein, like other cup-marked stones, was a prehistoric sacrificial site. A more practical theory suggests the holes were made in attempts to break the stone for building material. The idea was to drive hardwood wedges into the cups, soak them with water, and let the expanding wood split the rock. The foundation and base of St. Mary’s Church are said to be made of such granite blocks. Whether ancient ritual or practical construction attempt, the mystery of the cups adds to the allure of the Naturdenkmal Näpfchenstein. It stands as a silent testament to the forces of nature and the ingenuity of humans across the ages.
