Opened on December 20 1985 this museum showcases Oman’s incredible biodiversity. It’s located in the Ministry of Heritage and Culture complex in Al Khuwair. You’ll find it opposite the Zawawi Mosque.

The museum’s centerpiece is undoubtedly the whale hall. It houses the skeleton of a sperm whale a 14-meter-long giant. It was found stranded near Barka in 1986. This magnificent beast would have weighed around 35 tons. Its skeleton now weighs a hefty 3.5 tons. Some parts are made of wood and plaster. But the majority of this impressive skeleton is the original.

Beyond the whale. Explore halls filled with indigenous mammals. You’ll see stuffed Arabian leopards and caracals. There are also Arabian oryxes Arabian wolves and Arab red foxes. Skeletons of gazelles and ibex stand proudly. Don’t miss the collection of birds. Flamingos crows and owls are all represented. Reptiles snakes and lizards add to the diverse collection. Even snails and shells are showcased. The museum isn’t just about animals. There’s a rich collection of marine and animal fossils. Discover ancient mammals like primitive monkeys and elephants. Teeth from Deinotherium and Gomphotherium reveal clues to Oman’s prehistoric past. A 260-million-year-old fossilized tree from Al-Haqf is a highlight. So are 270-million-year-old coral remains from Wadi Al-Sahtan. These are truly remarkable treasures.

The museum is more than just a collection of specimens. It’s a vital center for research and education. Scientists and students use its resources regularly. Educational halls offer workshops and programs. This ensures Oman’s natural heritage is preserved and shared. In fact plans for a new three-floor building were announced in 2014. This new space will have 5000 square meters dedicated to exhibits. Imagine displays on marine environments geological history and wild environments. The third floor will even focus on the solar system planets space and meteors. This shows the museum’s dedication to education and scientific advancement.
