Have you ever wanted to get closer to a giraffe than you ever imagined? The Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch in San Antonio is the place where you can reach out and touch a giraffe’s soft, leathery skin. The Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch is a drive-through wildlife refuge with over 400 acres of land. The ranch has over 500 animals representing more than 40 species, but it is nothing like a traditional zoo. Instead of walking around viewing animals in cages, visitors are the ones locked in cages as they take a 4-mile drive through this sprawling ranch and through multiple open animal habitats. The ranch is separated into four distinct areas grouping species into diverse categories, with each having an adventure all its own. The Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch family has owned the land since 1884, and it’s been designated a Texas Land Heritage Property for its continued agricultural use for over a century. The family sought to do something more than just cattle and goat ranching, so they decided to bring in animals from all over the world, creating a diverse and fascinating collection. The Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch is a true Texas-style safari experience. You’ll see many endangered animals, including scimitar-horned oryx, who have long been extinct in the wild. The owners of the ranch, Ray and Trudy Soechting, have been rescuing endangered animals for years. Some animals, like the rhinos, weren’t rescued from the wild in Africa but instead came from facilities that are trying to protect them from poachers. You can drive through the ranch, get out and feed the animals; and, if you dare, even touch them. It’s a truly unique and unforgettable experience that lets you get up close and personal with these wonderful creatures. So, if you’re looking for a fun and educational day trip near San Antonio, the Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch is a must-see for anyone who’s looking for a captivating glimpse into the wild world of animals from all corners of the globe.
