“What if I told you, this seemingly modest building holds a vibrant story?” It is the Nativity of the Virgin Mary Romanian Orthodox Church in Chelsea. It stands as a testament to faith and community. Founded in 1924, this church has been a beacon for Romanian Orthodox Christians in the Boston area. It is a place where traditions are cherished.

The story of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary Romanian Orthodox Church began with a vision. The vision was of Romanian Orthodox faithful seeking a spiritual home. In the fall of 2003, their dream took shape. With the blessing of Archbishop Nathanael, the mission of “The Nativity of the Ever-Virgin Mary” was established. Locals also call it “St. Mary’s.”

Fr. Liviu Alexandrescu served as the first priest. He guided the community from 2003 to 2007. Then, in 2008, Fr. Narcis Stoica stepped into the role. He became a loving spiritual father and a good administrator. His dedication brought financial stability to the church. Most importantly, he purchased the church building. Before that, the community had been renting from the Orthodox Russian community.

Tragedy struck in October 2021 with Fr. Narcis’s untimely passing. In December 2021, Fr. Tudor Sambeteanu became the new pastor. Today, the Nativity of the Virgin Mary Romanian Orthodox Church continues to thrive.

Services at the Nativity of the Virgin Mary Romanian Orthodox Church are held in both English and Romanian. The Divine Liturgy takes place on Sunday mornings at 10:00 AM. To see a complete list of upcoming services, visit the parish website.
