The National Visual Arts Gallery, known locally as Balai Seni Visual Negara or simply Balai, has been around for over half a century. The Malaya Arts Council conceived the idea around 1954. Tan Sri Mubin Sheppard and Frank Sullivan brought this vision to life.
Originally, the gallery resided on Jalan Ampang. Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, Malaysia’s first Prime Minister, officiated its opening. In 1978, it briefly became the Muzium Seni Negara or National Arts Museum. In 1998, the National Visual Arts Gallery moved to its current location on Jalan Temerloh. Prime Minister Dato Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad inaugurated the new space. The gallery officially became the National Visual Arts Gallery in 2011. This followed the launch of the National Visual Arts Development Board Act.
