“What if this place could change your life?” I often wonder as I stand here at the National University of Vanuatu in Port Vila. This university is more than just buildings. It is a beacon of hope and opportunity for the people of Vanuatu.
The National University of Vanuatu was established by Parliament on December 17 2019. Act No 34 of 2019 made it official. The university combines several important institutions. These include the Vanuatu Institute of Teacher Education and the Vanuatu Institute of Technology. Also included are the Vanuatu Agriculture College, the Vanuatu Maritime College, the Vanuatu Nursing College, and the Vanuatu Police College.
Jean-Pierre Nirua was appointed as the first vice-chancellor. He is a former education minister. The university’s creation was a significant step for Vanuatu’s education system.

James Cook University offers a Bachelor of Environmental Sciences.
