The National Dance Company is also known as The Ghana Dance Ensemble. It began in 1962 at the University of Ghana. In 1992, part of the group moved to the National Theatre.

The Drama Company joined the National Theatre upon its completion in 1991. It was initially a Model Repertory Troupe at the University of Ghana. It was established in 1983.

Have you heard of the Concert Party? This popular theatre show peaked in the early twentieth century. It is a crowd-puller at the National Theatre. Ghanaian artists remodeled it. It became a popular form of theatre in the 1950s and 1960s. It even tackled important topics such as family planning and AIDS.

Construction of the National Theatre began on March 8, 1990. The governments of Ghana and China signed an agreement in 1989. The project cost twenty million US dollars. The National Theatre was completed on December 16, 1992. It was commissioned on December 30, 1992.

Notice the exterior. The lower parts are laid with polished granite. The upper curved parts are decorated with mosaic tiles. A three-tier water fountain graces the frontage. African art pieces dot the lawns.
