Glimmering threads of history woven into the very fabric of Malaysia await us at the National Textile Museum. This isn’t just a museum. It’s a vibrant tapestry of cultural heritage. The National Textile Museum stands proudly on Merdeka Square. It is housed in a stunning heritage building. This building was designed in the Indo-Saracenic Revival style by AB Hubback. He was the architect behind many of Kuala Lumpur’s famous landmarks. Completed in 1905, it first served as headquarters for the Federated Malay States Railways.

Imagine the building in 1905. It was a hub of railway administration. By 1917, the Selangor Public Works Department took over. Over the years, it housed the Selangor Water Department and the Central Bank. It even served as the High Court. Finally, in 2010, it was reborn as the National Textile Museum. It was gazetted as a historical building back in 1983.

Inside the National Textile Museum, four galleries await. They are spread over two floors. Each gallery unveils a different aspect of Malaysian textiles.

First, we have the Pohon Budi Gallery. “Pohon Budi” means “Tree of Life”. This gallery explores the origins of textile making. It showcases the tools, materials, and techniques used throughout history. See the intricate songket equipment. Marvel at the Royal Pahang weaving. Discover the beauty of Iban ceremonial cloth. Admire the delicate gold thread embroidery.

Next is the Pelangi Gallery. “Pelangi” means “rainbow”. This gallery celebrates Malaysia’s colorful heritage. It features different types of batik. It shows collections from Chinese, Baba, and Nyonya communities. These are rich in gold thread and beading. Examples of ethnic Sarawakian and Sabahan textile motifs are also displayed.

Upstairs, the Teluk Berantai Gallery awaits. “Teluk Berantai” means “interlocking bays.” This gallery focuses on a harmonious floral motif. It’s common in Malay textile designs. Admire Malay textiles and Indian textiles. See the woven silk, cotton, velvet, and pineapple fabric garments. These make up traditional Malay costumes.

Finally, we have the Ratna Sari Gallery. This gallery showcases exquisite jewelry. These are personal adornments worn by different ethnic communities. Admire tobacco boxes and chastity belts. See the belts, buckles, headdresses, and hair pins. Discover the beauty of waist accessories, pendants, and brooches. Beaded shoes, bracelets, anklets, hats, earrings, rings, and necklaces are there too. Mannequins display attire from Iban, Murut, Indian, Mah Meri, Malay, and Baba Nyonya communities.

The National Textile Museum is more than just a display of textiles. It is a celebration of Malaysian identity. It showcases the skills and artistry of its people. A visit here offers insight into the country’s soul. It reveals stories woven into every thread. The National Textile Museum reminds us that textiles are not just materials. They are carriers of culture. They are testaments to history.
