Established by royal decree on December 31, 1836, what began as a humble Royal School of Arts has transformed into Greece’s leading technological institution. Today we stand before the National Technical University of Athens. It is also known as NTUA or Athens Polytechnic. This university is a symbol of Greek innovation and resilience.

NTUA’s story is intertwined with Greece’s modern history. It started as a part-time vocational school. The school trained craftsmen and builders. This met the needs of the emerging Greek state. By 1840, it became a full-time technical school. Its role in Greece’s technical development grew. NTUA became the sole provider of engineering degrees. This lasted until the 1950s.

The National Technical University of Athens is named “Metsovion” to honor its benefactors. These were Nikolaos Stournaris, Eleni Tositsa, Michail Tositsas and Georgios Averoff. They originated from Metsovo. This small town is in the Epirus region. They donated generously in the late 19th century.

In 1873, NTUA relocated to its current campus on Patission Street. The campus was named Metsovion Polytechnion. This honored the benefactors who funded its construction. Student demand was rising. This made the relocation urgent.

The National Technical University of Athens played a vital role during the Axis occupation of Greece. From 1941 to 1944, it became a hub of resistance. Students actively participated in the National Resistance movement.

The Polytechnion Uprising in November 1973 was a pivotal moment. It marked a turning point in the struggle against the military dictatorship. Students barricaded themselves inside NTUA’s Patission Complex. They broadcast a pirate radio station. They called for rebellion. The military regime responded brutally. Army tanks broke through the gates. Violence was unleashed against the students. The uprising galvanized the Greek people. It irreparably damaged the junta which fell in 1974.

Today, the National Technical University of Athens is divided into nine academic schools. Eight are dedicated to engineering disciplines. This includes architecture. One school focuses on applied sciences like mathematics and physics. Undergraduate studies last five years.

The emblem of NTUA features Prometheus. He is bringing fire to mankind. In Greek mythology, Prometheus gave fire to humanity. This fire represents technology and knowledge. The emblem embodies NTUA’s commitment. It shows a dedication to addressing real human needs.

The National Technical University of Athens boasts high research activity. Research and education are its primary goals. NTUA manages research through several offices. These include the Special Accounting for Research Office and the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Unit.

NTUA’s Central Library has operated since 1914. It was the first library in Greece with a complete index. It remains one of the largest technical libraries in the country. It holds over 215000 books and 100000 scientific issues.

The Averof building is a prime example of Athenian Neoclassical architecture. Lysandros Kaftantzoglou designed it. Its design was directly influenced by the Athenian Acropolis monuments.

As we conclude our visit to the National Technical University of Athens, remember its enduring legacy. It is a place of learning and a symbol of Greek resilience. The National Technical University of Athens continues to shape the future of Greece and beyond.
