Envision a palace fit for a king, shimmering under the Malaysian sun. This, my friends, is the National Palace, Istana Negara. It’s a relatively new palace, having opened in 2011. It replaced the old National Palace in central Kuala Lumpur. The Istana Negara isn’t just a beautiful building. It’s a symbol of Malaysia’s unique constitutional monarchy. The King, who is also the ruler of one of Malaysia’s states, resides here. His term lasts for five years. Then, a Sultan from another state takes over. This rotation ensures representation from the nine states with Sultans.

The National Palace sits on almost 100 hectares of land. It boasts 22 domes, the two largest resembling intricately layered beetle leaves. At night, the domes are illuminated with colorful lights, a beacon visible from afar. The colors change depending on the event being held inside. The National Palace is divided into three main sections. The Formal Component houses areas like the Banquet Hall, the throne rooms, and meeting chambers. The Royal Component includes the royal apartments, dining areas, and even a private garden. The Administration Component houses the offices and support facilities for the palace staff.

Interestingly, this grand palace stands on land once occupied by a very different kind of residence. It was originally the home of Chan Wing, a Chinese tin tycoon. He built his impressive 13-room mansion in 1928. Mr. Chan Wing had amassed his wealth through the Hong Fatt Tin Mine. Imagine this tycoon, living here with his 26 children and numerous wives. During the Japanese occupation, Chan Wing, known for supporting anti-Japanese resistance, had to flee. The Japanese then used his former home as an officers’ mess. After the war, it briefly served the British Royal Air Force and then the Sultan of Selangor. Finally, in 1957, the Federal Government acquired the property. After significant renovations and expansions, it was transformed into the National Palace, Istana Negara, that we see today. It served as the official residence until 2011.

Though we can’t go inside the current National Palace, its exterior speaks volumes. It’s a testament to Malaysia’s rich history and unique system of government. The National Palace remains a potent symbol of the nation, standing as a proud landmark in Kuala Lumpur.
