“El gigante extremeño” they whispered. I’m standing before you at the National Museum of Anthropology in Madrid. This isn’t just any museum. It’s a treasure trove of human history. Founded in 1875 it’s Spain’s oldest anthropology museum.

Imagine the dedication of Dr Pedro González Velasco. He poured his savings into creating this scientific museum. He even acquired the remains of Agustín Luengo Capilla. “El gigante extremeño” a man with acromegaly. He stood 2.35 meters tall. His cast and bones are here. A poignant reminder of human diversity.

The museum boasts collections from Africa America and Asia. African artifacts from Spanish colonies are here. The collection of Moroccan jewelry is particularly stunning. There are ceramics too. Items from Equatorial Guinea’s Fang culture are also showcased.

The American collection is impressive. Captain Francisco Iglesias Brage’s collection is a highlight. It features dazzling headdresses and feathered ornaments from Amazonian cultures.

The Asian collection is vast. Over seven thousand pieces are here. They span centuries. Many items came from Southeast Asia. Specifically the Philippines. Dr Velasco’s personal collection forms a significant portion of this display. Many of these artifacts came from the doctor’s personal collection.
