The National Library and Documentation Services Board is a vital part of Sri Lankan history. It stands proudly on Independence Avenue in Colombo, its imposing exterior a testament to the country’s rich literary heritage. The building itself is a marvel of modern architecture, designed with a sustainable focus by renowned British architect, Michael Brawne. There are five floors, sheltering over a million volumes. The central core is a towering stack of books and manuscripts, kept safe from the elements. While the library is a serene haven for bookworms today, its path to completion was a long and winding one. Construction, initiated in 1976, faced numerous financial hiccups and delays, ultimately taking 12 years to finish. During this time, its grand opening was delayed, but it finally welcomed its first visitors in 1990. The National Library and Documentation Services Board is the central repository of knowledge for Sri Lanka. It’s also the national focal point for UNESCO’s Memory of the World Programme, highlighting its dedication to preserving and safeguarding cultural heritage. The building, designed by a British architect with a focus on sustainability, is an architectural gem, blending modern design with traditional Sri Lankan values. The stories of the books within its walls carry the weight of history, whispering tales of the past, present, and future of Sri Lanka.
