The National Institute of Statistics, or ISTAT, is Italy’s primary source of official statistics. It has been diligently collecting and analyzing data since its inception in 1926. Originally called the Central Institute of Statistics, ISTAT became the vital organ it is today thanks to Legislative decree no. 1162. The National Institute of Statistics doesn’t just count people. It paints a vibrant picture of Italian life, covering everything from economics to the environment. ISTAT’s work isn’t confined to Italy’s borders. As a key player in the European Statistical System, the National Institute of Statistics collaborates with Eurostat, ensuring data comparability across the EU. In 2016, the National Institute of Statistics embarked on a modernization journey. This transformation aimed to enhance the quality and availability of its data. The modernization also streamlined its organizational processes. This involved redefining data acquisition, processing, and governance. It’s a continuous effort to better serve citizens and policymakers. The National Institute of Statistics uses around 200 administrative data sources for its research. This is supplemented by periodic census data, moving from a decennial universal model to annual sampling. This shift required a significant reorganization of ISTAT’s data management strategies. The National Institute of Statistics also uses data virtualization. This allows real-time data integration without replication. This technology makes it easier and faster to access, manage, and deliver data, ultimately benefiting everyone who relies on accurate and timely information.
