Brace yourself. We are standing before a place that has significantly contributed to the fight against a global killer: the National Institute for Research in Tuberculosis. Established in 1956, the National Institute for Research in Tuberculosis was initially known as the Tuberculosis Chemotherapy Centre. It started as a joint project by the Indian Council of Medical Research or ICMR, the Government of Tamil Nadu, the British Medical Research Council, and the World Health Organization or WHO.
Its primary goal was to find the best ways to administer chemotherapy to treat pulmonary tuberculosis on a large scale. Can you imagine the challenge they faced? The National Institute for Research in Tuberculosis began its work with a small team. Eight international staff members from WHO worked alongside national experts from ICMR and the Tamil Nadu government. Dr. Wallace Fox from the BMRC led this dedicated group.
