Over 17000 works of art. Can you imagine? That’s what the National Gallery of Modern Art in Delhi holds. Right here before us stands Jaipur House a former palace now a treasure trove of Indian and international modern art.

The National Gallery of Modern Art wasn’t always here. Its story begins much earlier in 1938. A Delhi artists’ organisation first proposed a national gallery. The idea took root. Finally in 1954 the National Gallery of Modern Art opened its doors. It was inaugurated by Vice-president Dr S Radhakrishnan.

This magnificent building on Rajpath was once the Maharaja of Jaipur’s residence. Sir Arthur Blomfield designed it in 1936. The butterfly-shaped building features a central dome. Its location in the Central Hexagon around India Gate is significant. Many princely states had buildings there. The hexagon itself was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens.

The National Gallery of Modern Art’s collection is truly remarkable. It boasts masterpieces by Amrita Sher-Gil. Rabindranath Tagore’s works are also featured prominently. The gallery houses paintings sculptures prints and photographs. Some of the oldest works date back to 1857.

Amrita Sher-Gil’s paintings were among the first acquisitions. Her father Umrao Singh donated many pieces. He had a condition though. The government had to buy her husband’s work too. Jawaharlal Nehru stepped in. He ensured both collections were acquired. This collection is impressive.

The National Gallery of Modern Art has expanded significantly over time. In 2009 a new wing opened. It increased the exhibition space sixfold. The new wing includes an auditorium a theatre a conservation lab and more. This expansion truly solidified the National Gallery of Modern Art’s position as a world-class institution.

The National Gallery of Modern Art is more than just a museum. It’s a living testament to India’s rich artistic heritage. It’s a dynamic space showcasing the evolution of modern Indian art. From the Bengal School to the Progressive Artists’ Group the National Gallery of Modern Art tells the story of a nation’s artistic journey. It is a place where history and art converge. A place where you can trace the story of Indian modern art. From the earliest indigenous schools to contemporary works it’s a breathtaking journey. This is the National Gallery of Modern Art.
