Whose idea was it to build a college on a mere 0.8 hectares? Well, you’re standing in front of it, the National College of Ireland – Campus 1. Despite its compact size, this urban campus has been a hub of learning and ambition since its humble beginnings in 1951. Back then, the National College of Ireland started as the Catholic Workers College. It was a joint effort between the Jesuits and trade unions. Imagine dedicated Jesuits leading lectures two nights a week, nurturing the dreams of 103 students in a building in Ranelagh. Over time, it blossomed into the National College of Industrial Relations (NCIR) reflecting its growing ties with businesses and a changing Ireland. Fast forward to 1998, the college underwent a major transformation. It rebranded itself as the National College of Ireland, moved to this location in the Docklands, and expanded its reach nationwide. Today, this campus bustles with over 6,000 students. It has grown into a respected institution offering a wide range of courses from business to computing. And who knows? Maybe some of the students you see rushing to class today will be the next legends interviewed on the college’s “Legends in your Lunchtime” series!
