Dreaming of lifelong learning is possible at the National City Public Library. This library serves the community’s informational educational social and recreational needs. The National City Public Library stands as a cornerstone of the community. It enriches the lives of National City residents.
Let’s step back to the late 1890s. National City had been incorporated for over ten years. The city then initiated a library in 1898. It possibly started around Frank Kimball’s 1895 library. Frank Kimball helped found the National City Public Library. Rev Frank A Bissell also helped. He took pastoral duties at the Congregational Church. Frank and Warren Kimball donated 750 books. They expected the volumes to go to the new library.
Fast forward to 1909. The city received a Carnegie grant of $10000. Architect W S Hebbard designed the building. It showcased the Classical Revival style. The National City Public Library was dedicated on January 13 1911. Sadly that building was demolished in 1955.
The National City Public Library’s story continues. An image from 1972 captures a moment in time. The delivery desk was set in a spacious lobby. This allowed librarians to oversee the entire facility. The library also featured a private room for the librarian. A special Children’s Room was included.
Today the National City Public Library has expanded. It continues its mission. It serves all residents’ needs. The library recognizes the community’s diversity. This includes cultural linguistic and economic diversity. The library supports lifelong learning. It offers personal enrichment and empowerment. Access a variety of materials and current technology. Courteous expert staff are ready to assist. It provides a friendly environment that contributes to the quality of life in National City.
The library provides access to archival materials. These include books newspapers and photographs. Audiovisual recordings are available too. They tell the incredible stories of the Golden State.
