National Centre for Human Rights

Hidden within Amman’s vibrant tapestry lies the National Centre for Human Rights. It’s a beacon, quietly championing the rights and freedoms of all Jordanians. The National Centre for Human Rights officially opened its doors on June 1st, 2003. However, its story began months earlier, on December 19th, 2002. A Royal Decree, born from Article 94(1) of the Jordanian Constitution, brought the National Centre for Human Rights to life. This decree was later solidified by Permanent Law No. 51 of 2006, ensuring the centre’s enduring presence. The National Centre for Human Rights isn’t just a building; it’s a dynamic force. It actively investigates human rights violations, fields complaints, and provides crucial education and advocacy. The centre also monitors existing legislation. It works to seamlessly integrate human rights principles into Jordanian law and practice. The National Centre for Human Rights operates with a broad mandate. It tackles a spectrum of human rights concerns. Its core mission includes promoting human rights principles grounded in Islamic teachings, Arab heritage, and international charters. The centre strives to foster a democratic environment, free from discrimination. It encourages respect for the rule of law and advocates for economic, social, and cultural development. The National Centre for Human Rights also works to ensure Jordan’s continued participation in regional and international human rights agreements. In 2004, the National Centre for Human Rights further strengthened its international ties. It became a member of the Asia Pacific Forum. Initially joining as an Associate Member, it transitioned to Full Member status in 2007. The centre’s significant role in upholding human rights has been recognized globally. In fact, it achieved the prestigious ‘A status’ accreditation. This distinction, awarded by the International Coordinating Committee of NHRIs, acknowledges the centre’s adherence to the Paris Principles, the international gold standard for national human rights institutions. The National Centre for Human Rights stands as a testament to Jordan’s commitment to human rights. It’s a place where whispers of justice turn into powerful actions, shaping a brighter future for all.
