Founded on May 29 1959 as the School of Administration, the National Academy of Public Administration has grown into a multi-campus academy. It now has locations across Vietnam. These campuses are in Hue City, Da Nang City, and Ho Chi Minh City.

It was the Central School of Administration from 1961 to 1980. Between 1980 and 1981 it was the Central School of Administration and Economics. It became the National School of Administration in 1990 and the National Academy of Public Administration in 1992.
In September 2022, the government merged Hanoi University of Home Affairs into the National Academy of Public Administration. This took effect on January 1 2023. This merger expanded the academy’s capabilities and resources.
