“Floating” is the illusion you might experience when you see the Napier Bridge at night. It’s all thanks to the special lights fixed beneath it. This Chennai landmark is more than just a way to cross the Coovum River. It’s a piece of the city’s history.
The Napier Bridge connects Fort St. George and Marina Beach. It’s been a vital link for a long time. The bridge is one of Chennai’s oldest structures. Francis Napier, the Governor of Madras, had it built in 1869. He governed from 1866 to 1872.
The original Napier Bridge wasn’t the one you see today. That one was made of iron. The current concrete structure came later. In 1943, it was broadened. Then, in 1999, a new bridge was built next to it. This new section had a wider carriageway. The western side is 10.5 meters wide. The eastern side is a bit narrower at 9.75 meters. The Napier Bridge stretches 138 meters long. It has six spans across the river. There are also 2-meter-wide footpaths for pedestrians.
But the Napier Bridge is not just about function. It is also about beauty. In 2010, special lighting was added as part of the Marina Beach beautification project. The lights make it look like the bridge is floating on the water. There are 464 bulbs and fixtures highlighting the arches and surface. M. K. Stalin, the Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, inaugurated the lighting. The special lighting arrangement cost ₹1.62 crore. That’s equivalent to about US$420,000 in 2023. LDP Lighting of Sydney, Australia, designed the lighting. This company also worked on the Erasmus Bridge Rotterdam, the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and the Sydney Opera House.
And there is more. In 2022, the Napier Bridge got a makeover. It was painted like a chessboard for the 44th Chess Olympiad held in Chennai. Some people loved the artwork. Others found the pattern disorienting. The chessboard design even caused traffic jams. People wanted to take selfies and record Instagram Reels on the bridge.
Sadly, the Napier Bridge has faced some neglect. Some reports mention broken lights and exposed wiring. Maintenance is not always consistent. Still, the Napier Bridge remains an important symbol of Chennai.
