Is this a church? You might be surprised by the unique architecture of the U Jakobova žebříku. This church doesn’t boast towering spires or ornate stained glass windows like many traditional churches. Instead, it has a striking, modernist design. U Jakobova žebříku was built in 1971 during a period of political and social liberalization known as the “Prague Spring”. It was the only church built by the Czechoslovak Hussite Church during the communist normalization after 1968. This makes it a fascinating example of the architectural trends of the time. Its design, the work of Swiss architect Ernst Gisel, is a departure from the ornate styles often associated with religious buildings. The church is composed of two cubic blocks, one housing the prayer room and the other, the pastor’s apartment. This stark, minimalist style might surprise you. But it also creates a sense of peace and serenity within, a space for contemplation and reflection. U Jakobova žebříku underwent significant renovations and expansions in 1995. Architects Schaufler and Roskovec redesigned the church to address the building’s initial closed-off appearance and functional shortcomings. Now, a light-filled entrance welcomes visitors. A unique steel bell tower was also added, and for good reason. The name “U Jakobova žebříku” translates to “Jacob’s Ladder”. This name, adopted in 1997, references the biblical story of Jacob’s dream of angels ascending and descending a ladder to heaven. The bell tower, visible from afar, serves as a symbolic ladder, reaching towards the heavens and beckoning people. Inside, you’ll find a fascinating blend of modern architecture and art. The most striking piece is an altarpiece by Miroslav Rada titled “Is Christ Still Believed in Today, Even in This Place”. The artwork’s journey to U Jakobova žebříku is a story itself. Initially intended for another church, it found its home here thanks to the efforts of Jiři Štorek, a former pastor. The church also houses a pipe organ built in 1992 by the German company Orgelbau Wünning. It was one of three organs donated by the Saxon Church to the Czechoslovak Hussite Church in 1991. The organ, although small, has a unique feature. Due to its placement, the organist cannot see the preacher. To overcome this challenge, a mirror is installed above the pulpit to allow the organist to follow the service. U Jakobova žebříku is a truly unique place, a testament to the resilience and adaptability of faith during challenging times. It continues to serve as a vital community center, hosting services in Czech, Korean and Japanese. The church also opens its doors for various cultural events, concerts and even recordings, thanks to the excellent acoustics of its sanctuary.
