“Extra! Extra! Read all about it!” The cries of newspaper hawkers once echoed near the Nanyang Siang Pau building. Today, we stand before a landmark in Malaysian media history. Nanyang Siang Pau, or Nanyang Business Daily, has been a vital voice in the Chinese community for almost a century. Founded in Singapore in 1923 by Tan Kah Kee, Nanyang Siang Pau began its life in the Straits Settlements. It quickly became a key source of information, bridging communities and fostering understanding. Its founder, Tan Kah Kee, wasn’t just a newspaper man. He was a philanthropist and entrepreneur, passionate about education and the welfare of the Chinese community. Nanyang Siang Pau wasn’t just a business venture. It was a platform to empower, educate and connect. The newspaper’s journey wasn’t without its challenges. During World War II, publication was halted. The Japanese occupation silenced many voices, but Nanyang Siang Pau’s spirit remained unbroken. It resumed publication in 1945, a testament to its resilience. In 1962, Nanyang Siang Pau moved its headquarters to Kuala Lumpur, marking a significant shift in its history. The Singapore edition later merged with Sin Chew Jit Poh to form Lianhe Zaobao. This left Nanyang Siang Pau to focus on its Malaysian readership. Today, Nanyang Siang Pau continues its legacy as a leading Chinese newspaper in Malaysia. It has adapted to the digital age, offering online content and mobile apps. Yet, the core mission remains: to inform, educate, and connect. Nanyang Siang Pau stands as a monument to the power of the press and the importance of community.
