Nanko-minami

Opened in 1981, the Nankō Port Town Line, affectionately nicknamed the “New Tram,” is more than just a transit line in Nanko-minami. It represents Osaka’s forward-thinking spirit. This automated guideway transit system was a pioneering endeavor, the second-oldest AGT line in Japan, following Kobe’s Port Island Line. Nanko-minami and the New Tram were designed to breathe life into Osaka’s South Port area. They fostered new homes, businesses, and opportunities. Imagine the hustle and bustle as the first 200 series train, a vibrant blue, embarked on its maiden voyage in June 2016. These colorful trains, each sporting a unique livery, are a symbol of Nanko-minami’s dynamic character. Today, over twenty 200 series trains traverse the line, a testament to its growth and importance. Nanko-minami isn’t just about modern marvels. It’s a place where history whispers through the retired 100 and 100A series trains. These predecessors of the 200 series played a crucial role in shaping the area’s identity, their legacy living on in Nanko-minami’s story. In 1993, a temporary setback occurred at Suminoekōen Station, halting operations. But the resilient spirit of Nanko-minami prevailed, and services resumed, stronger and more determined. Nanko-minami is a testament to Osaka’s ability to transform and innovate. The New Tram, with its colorful trains and automated system, is a symbol of this continuous evolution, connecting people and places in this vibrant corner of Osaka.
