“Japan’s first park for the common people”. Does it pique your interest? This is Nanko Central Park. It is not actually in Osaka, but in Shirakawa, Fukushima Prefecture. This park boasts a rich history and scenic beauty.
Nanko Central Park is more than just a green space. It is a journey back in time. Lord Matsudaira Sadanobu, the 12th lord of the Shirakawa Domain, established it in 1801. He wanted to create a leisure spot for everyone.
Matsudaira Sadanobu was famous for his financial reforms. These reforms saved the Shirakawa Domain. He built an artificial lake by damming the Tanita River. Cherry and maple trees were planted all around. The surrounding hills became part of the garden’s borrowed scenery.
Nanko Central Park was opened to the public from the start. This was unusual for its time. It is now a National Historic Site and a Place of Scenic Beauty. The name “Nanko” comes from a Tang Dynasty poem. Li Bai wrote about “Nanhu Autumn Water, Night Smoke Nothing”. The park is located south of Komine Castle. This was also the residence of the Shirakawa Clan.
Around the lake, you can find picturesque spots. They are known as the “17 Views of Lake Minamiko”. There is also the Minamiko Shrine. It was built by Shibusawa Eiichi. He admired Sadanobu greatly. You can also enjoy teahouses and retro cafes. They serve the famous “Minamiko Dango”. These are dumplings with dumplings.
The “Kyorakutei” teahouse still stands. Sadanobu enjoyed moon viewing here with the common people. Nanko Central Park offers more than just beautiful views. Families can enjoy craft workshops. Children can learn about traditional Japanese crafts. Painting Daruma dolls is a popular activity.
