Did Nanjiao Township always have this name? No. Nestled in the northern part of Fangshan District, Beijing, Nanjiao Township has seen its share of name changes. Before 1953, it was known as the 5th District, then briefly as Jingxi Mining Area. It wasn’t until 1953 that it adopted the name Nanjiao, meaning “South Cellar”. This name is a direct reference to its unique location within a basin shaped like a cellar, nestled at the foot of Mao’er Mountain. In 2020, Nanjiao Township, with its eight villages spread across 40.04 square kilometers, was home to 3,190 residents. Nanjiao Village, located within the township, boasts a rich history spanning over 600 years, dating back to the Ming Dynasty. This village holds a significant place in Fangshan’s history as one of its four ancient trading hubs. The discovery and subsequent mining of coal during the Qing Dynasty’s Guangxu period brought prosperity and growth to Nanjiao Village. The once bustling streets, filled with shops and camel caravans laden with coal, transformed it into one of the wealthiest villages in the region. Remnants of this prosperous past can still be seen today. The old streets and alleyways are lined with the weathered facades of former shops, medical halls, temples, and theaters. The courtyard of the old squire’s mansion offers a glimpse into Nanjiao Village’s affluent past. The ornate spirit screen, adorned with engraved poetry, along with the numerous decorative paintings and carvings, speaks volumes about the owner’s high status. Close your eyes for a moment. Imagine the rhythmic clanging of camel bells echoing through the streets, the lively chatter of traders, and the hustle and bustle of caravans.
