From a wasteland to a watery oasis, that’s the story of Nanji Pond. This tranquil spot, nestled within Seoul’s World Cup Park, wasn’t always a place of peace. Nanji Pond sits within Pyeonghwa Park, also known as Peace Park. This park, along with Haneul Park, Noeul Park, Nanjicheon Park, and Hangang Riverside Park, make up the larger World Cup Park. The entire area, including the land now occupied by Nanji Pond, has a fascinating history. It was once the island of Nanjido. Imagine, before the skyscrapers and bustling city, Nanjido was a place where peanuts and millet grew. Then, in 1977, the island was connected to the mainland.
