Nan’ao General Headquarters stands proudly on Nan’ao Island. For centuries it served as a crucial military center. It protected the coasts of Guangdong Fujian and Taiwan. Today it’s a museum showcasing this vital history.
Imagine the Ming and Qing dynasties. The island’s location was perfect. It controlled smuggling routes and defended against relentless pirate attacks. Troops amassed. Nan’ao Island became a critical military base. In 1576 construction began. Yan Jifang a vice-general ordered the building of an administrative center. Hou Jigao expanded it in 1581. The fundamental design of Nan’ao General Headquarters was set.
Over the centuries 147 commanders served at Nan’ao. They fiercely guarded the coast. Zheng Chenggong a legendary general even rallied troops here. He prepared for his pivotal battle against the Dutch in Taiwan. A granite sculpture now stands as a testament to his legacy.
The Zhaobing Tree a magnificent banyan tree stands sentinel. Zheng Chenggong once addressed his soldiers here. Fifteen years later he triumphed in Taiwan. The tree stands as a symbol of his courage and victory.
A 4000 kg bronze cannon sits below. It’s a rare find. Its inscription details its creation in 1840. It names the officials who commissioned it. Deng Tingzhen the governor of Fujian and Zhejiang is among them.
Inside the headquarters the main hall is a centerpiece. Two rooms a yard and two corridors surround it. East and west doors provide access. A bell tower and drum tower complete the complex.
Three exhibition halls contain rich historical artifacts. Maps of Nan’ao County and its coastal defenses are showcased. Poems written by those who once served decorate the walls. The history of Nan’ao’s commanders is also carefully preserved.
Beyond the headquarters stands Xiongzhen Pass. Built in 1585 it’s been rebuilt and strengthened over time. It guarded Nan’ao City. It stands as a symbol of enduring defense. Lieyu Fort another fortification was constructed nearby. It played a crucial role in the defense against Dutch attacks.
