Glancing around, we find ourselves in Namyangju. This city is in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. Namyangju boasts a rich history and unique character. It offers a blend of urban and rural landscapes.

Namyangju-si was once part of Yangju-gun. It separated in April 1980. Later, in 1995, Migeum-si merged with Namyangju-gun. This formed the urban and rural complex we see today. The city hall resides in Geumgok-dong and Dasan-dong. Namyangju is divided into 6-eup, 3-myeon, and 7-dong administrative districts.

Namyangju sits northeast of Seoul. It is part of the Seoul Ring Expressway. This makes it easily accessible. The Jungang Line also passes through Namyangju. You can find Donong Station and Paldang Station here.

Did you know Namyangju is known for its pears? These sweet pears are exported to the United States, Japan, and Canada. Namyangju also cultivates organic vegetables. They use ecofriendly methods.

Namyangju offers more than just pears and vegetables. The National Arboretum is here. It is also called Gwangneung Arboretum. It features 15 specialized forests. It opened in April 1987. The Dasan historic site is also in Namyangju. This is where Jeong Yak-yong lived. He was one of Joseon’s greatest thinkers.

Namyangju has a monsoon-influenced climate. Expect cold, dry winters. Summers are hot and rainy.

The Namyangju Organic Museum opened in September 2011. It’s the world’s first museum about organic agriculture. It shows the history and development of organic farming.

Namyangju is twinned with several cities. These include Changzhou in China and Dartford in England. It is also linked with Fort Lee, New Jersey, in the United States.

Many notable people come from Namyangju. Singer BoA and actor Lee Kwang-soo were born here. Kim Yugyeom from Got7 is also from Namyangju.

Namyangju has grown significantly. In October 2008, its population reached 500,000. It was the 13th city in South Korea to do so. Namyangju continues to evolve. It balances its historical roots with modern progress. As you leave Namyangju, remember its sweet pears, organic efforts, and rich history.
