In 1637, a king walked through this very gate, the Namhansanseong Fortress West Gate. It wasn’t a triumphant procession. It was surrender. King Injo of the Joseon Dynasty, his crown prince by his side, passed through this gate and into the hands of the invading Qing dynasty. Imagine the weight of a kingdom on his shoulders as he took those final steps through the Namhansanseong Fortress West Gate. This gate, also known as the “Right Side Gate” because of its position relative to the secondary palace, has witnessed centuries of history. It’s one of the four main gates of the Namhansanseong Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in the 17th century, the fortress, and this gate along with it, served as a vital defense point against invaders. The Namhansanseong Fortress West Gate played a crucial role in protecting Hanyang, what we now know as Seoul, from the Sino-Manchurian forces. Although steep slopes on the west side made resupplying the fortress difficult, provisions could be more readily delivered from ferry landings at Gwangnaru and Songpanaru. This gate, the Namhansanseong Fortress West Gate, stands as a stark reminder of a pivotal moment in Korean history. It’s not just a gate, but a portal to a story of resilience, surrender, and the enduring spirit of a nation. While its history carries a sense of sadness, the Namhansanseong Fortress West Gate today offers stunning views. It’s become a favorite spot for photographers hoping to capture the Seoul skyline at night.
