Is it possible for a gate to whisper tales of kings, battles, and survival? Here at Namhansanseong Fortress South Gate, it certainly is. This isn’t just an entrance. The South Gate is a portal to a past. It is a past filled with both glory and despair.
Namhansanseong Fortress South Gate stands as the grandest of the fortress’s four main gates. It welcomes visitors. Locals often call it Nammun. It is not only the most magnificent gate, but it is also the most historically significant.
Imagine King Injo himself passing through this very gate. He sought refuge from the Manchu invasion in 1636. The South Gate had existed even before King Injo ordered the fortress to be built in 1624. It served as a vital entry point.
The South Gate was restored in 1779. King Jeongjo gave it the name “Ji-hwa-mun”. This translates to harmony and fellowship. The name reflects the hope for a good relationship between the king and his subjects.
Take a closer look at the gate’s architecture. You will notice the rainbow-shaped entrance. It stretches five meters high and 3.4 meters wide. This arched design was cutting-edge technology for its time. It provides superior stability. It withstands immense pressure.
Examine the fortress walls flanking the South Gate. Notice the stones. Some are big. Some are small. They form the walls. The stones become smaller and more refined as you look upward. It resembles corn kernels. This shows different construction techniques employed over time. The section before you showcases methods from the early 17th century.
Observe the parapets. These fences sit atop the fortress walls. They protected defenders from enemy arrows and bullets. Namhansanseong’s parapets stand out. They are made of grey bricks and quicklime. This makes them more resistant to cannon attacks.
Note the embrasures or gun-firing holes. The center embrasure allowed close-range firing. The two holes at the ends enabled long-range attacks. The angles adjust for different directions. Enemies approaching from a distance faced the long-range embrasures. Close enemies were targeted through the middle hole. These parapets evolved with firearms technology.
Namhansanseong also boasts five ongseong. These are jar-shaped outworks or defensive structures. They enhance protection. Three of them stand on the southern part of the fortress. During wartime, soldiers guarded these outworks. They stood ready to fire cannons upon invaders.
Sixteen hidden gates dot Namhansanseong. They are called “Ammun” in Korean. These gates were strategically placed in concealed locations. These gates allowed secret requests for help. They also provided avenues for food delivery during sieges.
Namhansanseong Emergency Palace offered refuge for kings during travels outside Seoul. The palace features royal offices, living quarters, and servants’ areas. Although smaller than the main palace, it mirrored royal layout principles.
