Did you know that Namgwang Elementary School stands as a place where education’s importance is deeply rooted? This school reflects Korea’s long-standing tradition of valuing learning. Let’s take a closer look at Namgwang Elementary School.

Historically, Korean society has always placed immense value on education. Learning was not widely accessible until after the Korean War. Before 1945, less than 20 percent of Koreans had received any kind of formal education. The modern education system in South Korea is based on a 1968 charter. This charter identifies education as a crucial aspect of citizenship. It also defines the government’s role in ensuring all Korean children have access to education.

Education in Korea has been shaped by class consciousness. In pre-modern times, upward mobility was rare. Koreans believed society’s leaders should be the most educated. During the Chosun Dynasty, passing civil service exams was the key to success for families. Wealthier families invested heavily in tutors. This fervor for education contributed to South Korea’s rapid economic development. It’s rooted in respect for the educated and the awe of commoners towards those who could read and write.

Confucianism has greatly influenced education. It emphasizes virtues that began in early childhood. The ideal was the scholar-official skilled in poetry and statecraft. Students had to master classical Chinese. This involved learning tens of thousands of characters.

Formal education began in the Three Kingdoms era. The kingdom of Koguryo studied Confucian classics. The first public institution was T’aehak founded in 372. Modeled after Chinese institutions, it taught Chinese language and Confucian classics.

During the Shilla Dynasty, the hwarangdo system trained young men for national defense. Confucianism came later to Shilla compared to other kingdoms. After unification, Kukhak was established in 682. Around 750, it was renamed T’aehakkam and offered courses with the Analects.

The Chosun Dynasty adopted neo-Confucianism. The goal was to create moral leaders. Members of the Chiphyonjon enjoyed privileges. A national school Songgyun’gwan was established in 1398. However, it mainly served aristocrats.

Private academies called sowon emerged in the mid-sixteenth century. They focused on Confucian studies. Practical subjects were less valued.

In the late nineteenth century, modern private schools were established. Christian missionaries promoted education for women and Western ideas. The government established modern schools. King Kojong emphasized education for competent citizens.

Namgwang Elementary School stands as a successor to this rich educational history. It continues the tradition of fostering learning and growth in young minds. Remember as you pass through its grounds that you’re walking through a place where Korea’s dedication to education lives on.
