Marvelous Nakhoda Mosque isn’t it? This magnificent structure stands before you. It’s Kolkata’s principal mosque a testament to faith and architectural brilliance.

The Nakhoda Mosque wasn’t always this grand. Before 1854 two smaller mosques occupied this spot. Haji Zakariah a wealthy Cutchi Memon merchant and devotee saw a vision. He wanted to build something truly spectacular.

Haji Zakariah wasn’t just a businessman. He was a leader. He unified the Sunni Muslim community. He purchased the land between the existing mosques. He then funded the construction of a single larger mosque. This became the Nakhoda Mosque. Nakhoda means mariner a fitting title for a man who owned 99 ships.

Construction started in 1926. It concluded in 1935. Prominent Cutchi Memons contributed generously. Abdur Rahim Osman played a major role. The final cost reached a staggering 1500000 rupees. The British engineering firm Mackintosh Burn & Co oversaw the building.

The mosque’s design is breathtaking. It imitates the Mughal Emperor Akbar’s mausoleum in Sikandra Agra. The gateway resembles the Buland Darwaza at Fatehpur Sikri. Granite stones from Tolepur add to its beauty. The interior overflows with exquisite ornamentation.

Nakhoda Mosque boasts three domes and two towering minarets. They reach a height of 151 feet. An additional 25 smaller minarets range from 100 to 117 feet. The prayer hall holds up to 10000 worshippers.

The mosque’s history isn’t without its challenges. Legal disputes arose. The Calcutta High Court intervened. Rules were established to manage the mosque ensuring Cutchi Memon Jamat control. A Zakariah family member remains a trustee.

Today Nakhoda Mosque stands as a symbol of Kolkata’s rich history. It’s a place of worship a testament to community spirit and architectural splendor. It embodies faith prosperity and resilience. Isn’t it simply awe-inspiring?
