“Did those children know their lives were about to change forever?” Welcome to N’akama, a beacon of hope for hearing-impaired children in Madagascar. While not much is known about this specific gallery or its collection, the name ‘N’akama’ itself echoes a heartwarming story. You see, N’akama is short for ‘Akanin’ny Marenina’, a center established in Antsirabe in 1985 by the Malagasy Lutheran Church. Driven by the pleas of parents seeking specialized education for their hearing-impaired children, a branch of N’akama was soon established, right here in Antananarivo. N’akama isn’t just a school. It’s a place where children, aged 5 to 23, embrace life beyond limitations. Imagine learning carpentry, sewing, or even computer skills, all within the nurturing embrace of this unique institution. In January 2012, N’akama students experienced an unforgettable day. They were invited to Iavoloha Palace by the First Lady at the time, Mialy Rajoelina, a known advocate for children’s welfare. There, they met their idols – famous Malagasy singers and performers – a memory forever etched in their hearts. N’akama represents the indomitable spirit of those who strive to learn, connect, and express themselves, proving that limitations can be overcome with unwavering support and a little bit of Fitiavana (love).
