Nahant Village Church

Gazing at the Nahant Village Church, one might hear whispers of resilience. This isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to Nahant’s enduring spirit. The Nahant Village Church stands as the oldest church in Nahant. Its story begins in a simple stone schoolhouse. As early as 1820, Sunday services echoed within those humble walls. The first official structure, known as the Nahant Church, arrived in 1832. It served as a summer sanctuary for Bostonians escaping the city heat. Imagine the scene. Families arriving from Boston, filling the pews for services held from the first Sunday in July until Labor Day. Distinguished ministers, including Reverend Phillips Brooks, graced the pulpit. He, the rector of Boston’s Trinity Church, also penned the beloved carol, “O Little Town of Bethlehem”. Tragedy struck in the 1850s when a fierce storm ravaged the Nahant Church. Yet, the community persevered. In 1851, the year-round Protestant families established the Village Church. They called it the Independent Methodist Society. This church, later renamed the Nahant Village Church, provided a spiritual home during the reconstruction. The granite and wood sanctuary we see today rose in 1868. In 1905, the Village Church joined the Congregational Church. Then, a beautiful union occurred. In 1959, the Nahant Church and the Village Church merged. They officially became The Nahant Village Church, affiliating with the United Church of Christ that same year. Both buildings served the congregation until the mid-1960s. Then, the old Nahant Church underwent renovations. It expanded to include Christian Education rooms, Swansburg Hall (a fellowship hall named after a beloved pastor), a kitchen, a pastor’s study, and a chapel. The chapel incorporated furniture and stained-glass windows from the old Village Church. The Nahant Village Church stands today as an Open and Affirming congregation. It welcomes people of all faiths. It offers worship services, Christian education, choirs, and outreach programs. From humble beginnings in a schoolhouse to a beacon of inclusivity. The Nahant Village Church truly embodies the spirit of community and faith.
