Slipping through the Judean hills, Nahal Gila whispers tales of a land steeped in history. Nahal Gila meanders towards the west of Bethlehem. It’s a short distance from Jerusalem, in the northern Judean hills. Har Gilo overlooks Nahal Gila. This area has a long history. The Turks, the British, and the Jordanians all recognized its strategic importance. Each had military bases here. After 1967, the Israel Defense Forces established their own base here. A civilian settlement, also named Har Gilo, was founded nearby in 1968. This settlement is named after the biblical Gilo mentioned in the Book of Joshua. This links the modern settlement with ancient roots in the Tribe of Judah. Har Gilo is considered a part of Gush Etzion. Archaeological digs near Har Gilo, and thus near Nahal Gila, have uncovered remnants of the past. These include buildings and a winepress from the Iron Age III, roughly between 586 and 539 BCE. Pottery shards also hint at activity during the early Islamic period. So as you stand near Nahal Gila, remember that you are standing in a place marked by centuries of human activity. It’s a place where empires clashed and where daily life unfolded, from the mundane to the momentous. Nahal Gila carries the echoes of these stories in its flow.
