Crimson azaleas greet you at Nagaoka Tenmangu shrine. This Kyoto shrine isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a living testament to Sugawara no Michizane. He was a scholar and poet. He served in various government positions. This Tenmangu sect Shinto shrine is dedicated to him. Michizane is considered the god of academics.

Nagaokakyo held special significance for Michizane. It was a place he enjoyed. He often appreciated poetry and music there. The shrine’s exact founding date is unknown. Records show it was rebuilt in 1498. This was after it burned down during the Onin War.

Look closely. Notice the ox statues. The ox is a sacred messenger animal here. One theory links this to Michizane’s birthdate. His birthday fell on an ox year in the Chinese zodiac. Another theory suggests the ox guided the shrine’s location.

The plum blossom is another significant symbol. Michizane loved plum blossoms. They often appear in his poems. Beyond the main hall the shrine boasts a stunning azalea garden. Approximately 100 Kirishima azaleas grow at the entrance. They’re about 8.2 feet tall. Their crimson blossoms in April and May are breathtaking.

Another highlight is the Hatijyogaike pond. Built in 1638 by Imperial Prince Hachijo this large irrigation pond sits in front of the shrine. From May to July aquatic plants bloom around it. The flat bridges offer perfect views. A maple tree garden called Kinkeien is also on the shrine grounds. This strolling pond garden features a small pond an island a pebble beach a flat stone bridge and arranged stones.

The main hall the Honden is the most important building. It’s a traditional Japanese architectural shrine. The vermilion wooden pillars are striking. The Honden is sacred. It is only open to priests and those participating in ceremonies.
