Nestled at the foot of Guryong Mountain, Naegok-dong whispers tales of Seoul’s rich past. Naegok-dong, a neighborhood of Seocho District, invites you to explore its unique charm. Originally part of the Eonju district, Naegok-dong’s name evolved from the central village once known as “Angol” or “Anmal.” Imagine this area during the Joseon period, a dense forest teeming with tigers and foxes, home to the Gyeongju Kim clan, the first settlers of Naegok-dong. This area also housed Heoninreung, a royal tomb that limited residential development for a time. Today, remnants of this history linger, including Hyeonneung and Inneung, located at 13-1 San, Naegok-dong. These royal tombs offer a glimpse into Naegok-dong’s historical significance. Naegok-dong encompasses several villages like Heonneungmal, Saemmaeul, Neunganmaeul, and Sinheungmaeul. Each village holds its own stories, contributing to the rich tapestry of Naegok-dong. Interestingly, Naegok-dong once held the Yeongneung, the burial site of King Sejong the Great, before it was relocated to Yeoju in 1469. Naegok-dong also boasts several educational institutions. Daniel High School, Naegok Elementary School, and Eonnam Elementary School nurture the next generation, adding a vibrant energy to this historic neighborhood. As you stand here, in the heart of Naegok-dong, take a moment to appreciate the layers of history beneath your feet. From a forested land inhabited by tigers to a modern neighborhood, Naegok-dong offers a captivating journey through time.
