Did you ever hear of a caravanserai being reborn as a madrasah? Here at the Nadir Devon Begi Madrasah, that’s exactly what happened. This architectural marvel, nestled in the heart of Bukhara, Uzbekistan, stands as a testament to a fascinating twist of fate. Nadir Devon Begi Madrasah graces the eastern side of Lyab-i Hauz, a historic square. It was commissioned by Nadir Devon Begi, a vizier serving under Imam Quli Khan during the early 17th century. Initially intended as a caravanserai, a resting place for weary travelers and merchants, the Nadir Devon Begi Madrasah took a different path. Construction began around 1622 and wrapped up rather quickly, in 1623. Legend whispers that upon its completion, the Khan himself, Imam Quli Khan, declared it too beautiful for mere commerce. He proclaimed it a madrasah, a place of learning and spiritual growth. And so, Nadir Devon Begi, perhaps with a touch of disappointment but also recognizing a golden opportunity, complied. The caravanserai became the Nadir Devon Begi Madrasah. The transformation wasn’t merely a change of name. The structure, originally designed for lodging and trade, needed adjustments to fit its new educational purpose. A loggia, a portal, and angular towers were added to the facade. A second story was constructed to house student rooms, known as hujras. While lacking the typical madrasah layout of a large central classroom and mosque, the Nadir Devon Begi Madrasah adapted. The courtyard, once bustling with merchants and camels, became a tranquil space surrounded by these hujras. Look closely at the vibrant tilework adorning the portal. Notice the depictions of mythical Huma birds and grazing deer, symbols not typically found in Islamic architecture. These, alongside the surviving mosaics on the side facades, hint at the building’s original purpose and offer a glimpse into the artistic flair of the time. The Nadir Devon Begi Madrasah has weathered the centuries, undergoing several restorations to preserve its beauty. Its arched doorways, carved wooden details, and brick-paved courtyard offer a tangible link to a rich past. Nadir Devon Begi may not have earned his fortune through trade as he initially envisioned, but he gained something far more valuable: a legacy intertwined with knowledge, spirituality, and architectural splendor. The Nadir Devon Begi Madrasah stands as a unique blend of history, artistry, and happenstance, a place where a caravanserai found its true calling as a beacon of learning.
