Established in 1968, NIBM began as the Management Development and Productivity Centre. This was under the Ministry of Industries and Scientific Affairs. The UNDP collaborated with the ILO to get it started. In 1976, it officially became the National Institute of Business Management.
Since then, NIBM has strived for excellence. It offers programs to clients from Sri Lanka and overseas. In 2004, it came under the Ministry of Skills Development. Today, NIBM operates under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Skill Development.
