Isn’t it delightful to see children’s faces light up when they encounter Myrtle the Turtle? This charming sculpture sits right here in the Myrtle Street Playground. It’s not just any sculpture. Myrtle the Turtle is a bronze artwork created by Nancy Schőn. She is also the artist behind the famous Make Way for Ducklings statues. Those are in the Public Garden.

Myrtle the Turtle gained its name for two reasons. First, it is located in the Myrtle Street playground. Second, it is a nod to Myrtle the Turtle. She is the New England Aquarium’s giant sea turtle. She weighs 560 pounds.

The sculpture is a replica of a Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle. Sadly, this turtle is the most endangered sea turtle in the world. The Beacon Hill Garden Club funded the project. They celebrated their 90th anniversary. The sculpture was unveiled in May 2019. It quickly became a favorite spot for kids.

Schön has been shaping Boston’s public art for decades. She also created the Tortoise and Hare sculpture in Copley Square. Her art invites interaction. Children love to climb and play on her sculptures. Myrtle the Turtle is no exception.

Initially, Myrtle the Turtle was placed in the center of the playground. But there were concerns. The bronze surface became hot in the sun. It could burn children’s skin. The sculpture was moved to a shadier spot. It now resides in a fenced-in planting bed near the entrance.

The relocation was a collaborative effort. The city, the Garden Club, and the Friends of the Myrtle Street Playground all agreed. The Beacon Hill Architectural Commission approved the plan. The new location is safer. It also protects the plants.

Ryan Woods is the city’s Parks and Recreation Department commissioner. He said the new spot keeps children safe. It also allows everyone to enjoy Myrtle the Turtle. Schön expressed gratitude. She was happy the sculpture remained in the playground.

Miguel Rosales designed the planting bed. He carefully selected the plants. Schön praised his artistic genius. Kate Enroth is the president of the Garden Club. She is pleased with Myrtle the Turtle’s new home. The group expects Myrtle to become a special part of the playground.

The sculpture is four feet long. It is designed for children to climb on. Within minutes of its unveiling, kids were already riding Myrtle. The sculpture is more than just art. It’s a place for joy and interaction.

So, as you see children playing on Myrtle the Turtle remember the story. Remember the artist, the community, and the sea turtle it honors. It’s a beautiful blend of art, nature, and community spirit. It all comes together in this special spot.
