Mylapore, or Mylarpha as the Romans knew it, was a bustling port in the Sangam era, a time of flourishing arts and vibrant trade. Romans, Greeks, and Arabs flocked here, drawn by the allure of spices, precious stones, and exotic silks. Mylapore was a crossroads of cultures, where gold and silver were exchanged for the treasures of the East. Imagine Roman merchants in vibrant togas bartering for fragrant sandalwood and shimmering pearls. This trade enriched Mylapore, shaping its identity as a center of commerce and cultural exchange. Even before this era, Mylapore, then known as Mayilapuram, or “land of peacocks,” held a special place in mythology. Legend tells of Parvati, cursed to become a peacock, who brought flowers to Shiva in his lingam form. This devotion inspired the name Mayilapuram, a testament to the sacred bond between gods and the natural world. The Kapaleeshwarar Temple stands as a symbol of Mylapore’s enduring spirit. Though the original temple, closer to the shore, was destroyed, the current structure incorporates its remnants, blending old and new. The vibrant stucco gopurams depict stories of gods, saints, and miracles, showcasing the rich tapestry of Mylapore’s beliefs. The temple tank, gifted by the Nawab of Arcot under the condition that Muslims could use it during Muharram, reflects the spirit of coexistence that has marked Mylapore’s history. Inside, Mother Mary is depicted in a sari, while Christ’s crucifix rises from a lotus, flanked by two peacocks.
