Myeongdong Jaemiro, also known as Cartoon Street or Zaemiro, bursts from a small alley near Myeongdong Station. It stretches 450 meters uphill towards the Seoul Animation Center. This vibrant street pulses with the energy of Korean manhwa, comics, and animation. The Seoul Metropolitan Government dreamed up Myeongdong Jaemiro. They wanted a place to celebrate Korea’s “imaginative industry” and draw tourists. Myeongdong Jaemiro links the bustling Myeongdong shopping district with Namsan Mountain. This once overlooked area now teems with life and art. Think of it as a street-long open-air cartoon gallery. Walls are canvases. Graffiti-like paintings pop with familiar characters. Comic quotes and short stories add another layer of charm. Five small parks dot the route, offering spaces to soak it all in. These “manhwa culture stations” add to the whimsical atmosphere. One of these, Sangsang Park, sits right in front of Exit 3. Another, Manhwa Samgeori, is by the Pacific Hotel. Even a public parking lot gets in on the action. The Sayeon Post Office displays stories from local residents. The street’s art reflects Korea’s rich manhwa history. You’ll see everything from the 1970s robot Jjibba to characters from the 2002 hit “Goong (Princess Hours).” Even local businesses contribute. Shop owners and hotels showcase their own artwork and bits of Korean history. About halfway up Myeongdong Jaemiro, you’ll find the Zaemirang. This multi-story building houses galleries, shops, and even a rooftop reading room with heated floors. The Zaemirang is a perfect place to explore the world of webtoons. It’s a place where generations connect over shared stories. Myeongdong Jaemiro isn’t static. It hosts festivals and special events. Imagine cartoonists sketching for fans while indie bands play.
