Hidden beneath Weston’s soil lies the MWRA Norumbega Covered Storage. This isn’t just any water storage facility. It’s a marvel of engineering a testament to Boston’s commitment to clean drinking water. Imagine a vast underground reservoir holding 115 million gallons of treated water. That’s enough to quench the thirst of over two million people across 35 cities and towns. This incredible structure replaced the old Norumbega Reservoir an open-air facility that was vulnerable to contamination.
The MWRA Norumbega Covered Storage came online on May 6 2004. Its construction was a major undertaking a feat of design-build ingenuity. This method involved a single contractor handling both design and construction a smart move that streamlined the process and reduced costs. The Norumbega Constructors a joint venture of J.F. White Constructing Company and Slattery Skanska Inc played a key role. Metcalf & Eddy and Weidlinger Associates also contributed their expertise.
The project wasn’t without its challenges. The MWRA worked closely with Weston’s Board of Selectmen. They created the Norumbega Working Group. This group represented various town boards and neighborhoods ensuring community voices were heard. This collaboration improved the project significantly addressing community concerns and mitigating environmental impacts.
The MWRA Norumbega Covered Storage is more than just a reservoir. It’s a symbol of collaboration and innovation. It protects our precious drinking water from potential contaminants like algae bacteria and animals. Think of the peace of mind it provides knowing that millions rely on its clean water supply. This underground giant isn’t just a storage facility. It’s a safeguard a vital link in the chain that brings life-giving water to our homes.
While the open Norumbega Reservoir remains as an emergency backup all public access to both is prohibited. A Weston Working Group Public Access Subcommittee is exploring future public access options. For now the MWRA Norumbega Covered Storage serves silently and efficiently protecting Boston’s water supply. This essential facility underscores the importance of infrastructure. It ensures the health and well-being of millions. It’s a testament to the ingenuity and collaboration that make our cities thrive.
