Who was Mwabusa Mwami, and why does his final resting place lie here in Geneva, far from his homeland? Mwabusa Mwami, born Prince Bangiricenge, was the penultimate king of Burundi. His life, spanning from 1912 to 1977, was a tumultuous journey marked by both privilege and exile. Mwabusa Mwami ascended to the throne at the tender age of three after his father’s death. Imagine a child king, ruling a nation grappling with colonial rule. His reign began under German control, transitioned to Belgian administration, and finally witnessed Burundi’s independence in 1962. Mwabusa Mwami sought to maintain balance in a nation rife with ethnic tensions between the Hutu and Tutsi populations. He strategically appointed prime ministers from both ethnic groups, hoping to quell unrest. However, this delicate balance was shattered in 1965 when a Hutu-led coup attempt forced Mwabusa Mwami into exile. He sought refuge first in the Republic of the Congo, then finally settled in Switzerland. Here in Geneva, Mwabusa Mwami lived out his final years, a king without a kingdom. He died in 1977, a poignant reminder of the turbulent times that shaped his life and his nation. Mwabusa Mwami’s burial in Switzerland became a point of contention years later. His daughter sought to repatriate his remains to Burundi for a state funeral, believing it could foster reconciliation. However, his niece argued that the king’s final wish was to remain in Switzerland. A legal battle ensued, culminating in the court’s decision to uphold Mwabusa Mwami’s wishes. He rests here in Geneva, a king whose legacy continues to resonate in the heart of Africa.
