Siekea Anna de Haas. A name etched in stone, here in the tranquil heart of Paramaribo’s Palmentuin. Have you ever heard a story whispered through the rustling leaves of palm trees? This is the story of Mvr. Haas, a woman who journeyed across oceans only to find her final resting place in this serene garden. Mvr. Haas was the wife of Warmolt Tonckens, a prominent figure who served as Suriname’s governor in the late 19th century. Imagine, if you will, the year 1895. Siekea, after years apart, finally reunited with her husband in this tropical land, bringing their two daughters with her. Life, however, had other plans. Just a year after her arrival, Siekea tragically passed away at the young age of 46. Heartbroken, Warmolt chose this peaceful corner of the Palmentuin, then a private garden belonging to the government, as her final resting place. A grand burial mound, a testament to his love, marks her grave. Locals whisper tales of Warmolt, his heart heavy with grief, visiting Siekea’s grave every single day. In 1903, his term finished, he left Suriname with his daughters, leaving behind Siekea’s memory etched in stone and soil. So, as you stand before Mvr. Haas’s grave, remember her story. A story of love, loss, and the enduring connection between a man and his beloved, even in the face of death. Her memory, much like this peaceful garden, offers a moment of reflection in the bustling heart of Paramaribo.
