Did Mutter ever imagine his collection would become this infamous? The Mütter Museum we stand before isn’t your typical museum. It houses a fascinating and sometimes unsettling collection of medical specimens, instruments, and anatomical oddities. Dr. Thomas Dent Mütter, a 19th-century surgeon, believed in the power of visual learning. He donated his collection to the College of Physicians of Philadelphia in 1858. His goal was to educate future doctors and the public. The Mütter Museum’s collection has only grown larger and stranger over the years.

One of the most famous exhibits is the Hyrtl Skull Collection. This collection consists of over 100 human skulls, each meticulously labeled with details about the person’s life and death. These skulls offer a glimpse into the past, showcasing the effects of various diseases and injuries. Another crowd favorite is the Soap Lady. Her body naturally turned into adipocere, a soap-like substance, after burial. You’ve probably heard about the piece of Albert Einstein’s brain that resides here. But did you know that there is an 8-foot-long colon on display? It belonged to a man who suffered from a condition known as megacolon.

The Mütter Museum also boasts an impressive array of medical instruments. From antique amputation saws to trepanning tools used to drill holes into skulls, these instruments offer a sobering reminder of the often-gruesome history of medicine. While the Mütter may not be for the faint of heart, it’s a place that stays with you long after you leave.
