Ever heard of a roller coaster named after a jazz tune? The Muskrat Scrambler at Six Flags New Orleans had a surprisingly musical connection.

This family-friendly steel coaster was more than just a ride. It was a tribute to New Orleans’ vibrant musical heritage. Let’s dive into the story of the Muskrat Scrambler.

The Muskrat Scrambler opened on May 20, 2000. It was located in the Jazzland section of Six Flags New Orleans. The ride was a Wild Mouse coaster manufactured by L&T Systems. It featured a height of 47.6 feet and a track length of 1,183.4 feet. Riders zipped around the winding track at speeds of up to 25 miles per hour. The coaster could accommodate 700 riders per hour.

The name “Muskrat Scrambler” pays homage to the jazz standard “Muskrat Ramble”. Kid Ory composed this tune in 1926. Louis Armstrong and His Hot Five first recorded it. It became one of their most frequently recorded pieces. “Muskrat Ramble” is a lively tune known for its infectious energy. The roller coaster’s name perfectly captured the ride’s fun and thrilling experience.

Sadly, the Muskrat Scrambler’s story took a turn for the worse. Hurricane Katrina devastated Six Flags New Orleans in August 2005. The park closed and the roller coaster ceased operation. Though the Muskrat Scrambler remained standing for many years, it never operated again. It stood as a silent reminder of the park’s glory days.

The Muskrat Scrambler was finally demolished in 2024. Though gone, its memory lives on. It reminds us of the unique blend of music and thrills that defined Six Flags New Orleans.

Think about the echoes of jazz music that once filled the air as riders twisted and turned on the Muskrat Scrambler. It was a unique experience that embodied the spirit of New Orleans.
